Royal Lifesaving Society Swimming Programs 2010 (Schedules Below and on Calendar Page)

Once again for the 2010 Summer Swimming Program we will be offering the Royal Lifesaving Society Swimming Programs. Our comprehensive Royal Lifesaving Society program consists of the Preschool (levels A-E), Swimmer (levels 1-6), Swim Patrol (Rookie, Ranger and Star), Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross swimming levels. It is strongly recommended that students enrol for the full summer session for Bronze programs.

Preschool (ages 3-5)

The Preschool Program gives children a head start on learning to swim. Preschool levels develop an appreciation and healthy respect for the water before these kids get in too deep. In Preschool levels we work to ensure 3 to 5-year olds become comfortable in the water and have fun acquiring and developing a foundation of water skills. We incorporate Water Smart® education in all levels.

Swimmer Levels 1 to 6 (ages 5-12)

Our Swimmer program makes sure children learn how to swim before they get in too deep. Swimmer progressions accommodate 5 to 12-year-olds including absolute beginners as well as swimmers who want to build on the basics. We stress lots of in-water practice to develop solid swimming strokes and skills. Water Smart® education is incorporated into all levels.

The Swim Patrol (Rookie, Ranger and Star for ages 9-12)

The Swim Patrol program provides enriched training for kids who are ready to go beyond learn-to-swim. The content is challenging and the levels demand good physical conditioning for timed swims and a variety of lifesaving skills. The Swim Patrol consists of three levels:

1. Rookie Patrol · Rookie Patrol features timed 100 m swims, 350 m workouts and swims with clothes. This award takes a work hard & play hard approach that develops swimming strength and efficiency, with emphasis on personal responsibility for Water Smart® behaviour.

2. Ranger Patrol · The Ranger Patrol award is challenging but achievable with effort. Skill drills enhance capability in the water and include a non-contact rescue.

3. Star Patrol · The Star Patrol award demands good physical conditioning for timed swims and workouts; this award also demands lifesaving judgement for whistle signals, and airway and bleeding first aid priorities. This award is excellent preparation for the Bronze Star award.

The Bronze Star (Prerequisite: None)

The Bronze Star award is the pre-Bronze Medallion training standard and it provides excellent preparation for success in obtaining the Bronze Medallion award. In Bronze Star, participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and as partners. They learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and they develop Water Smart® confidence and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard.

The Bronze Medallion (Prerequisite: Minimum 13 years of age or Bronze Star)

Our Bronze Medallion program teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education—judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries and defence and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues. Participants continue to develop stroke efficiency and endurance through timed swims.

The Bronze Cross (Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion / Emergency First Aid)

The Bronze Cross program is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification.
