Red Cross and Royal Lifesaving Society Swimming Programs
The Kettles Swimming Program is pleased to offer both the Red Cross and Royal Lifesaving Society Swimming Programs. Our comprehensive program consists of the Red Cross Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids (levels 1-10), Swim Patrol (Rookie, Ranger and Star), Bronze Star, Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross swimming levels. It is strongly recommended that students enroll for the full summer session for the Bronze programs.
Red Cross Preschool (ages 3-5)
The Preschool Program gives children a head start on learning to swim. Preschool levels develop an appreciation and healthy respect for the water before these kids get in too deep. In Preschool levels we work to ensure 3 to 5-year olds become comfortable in the water and have fun acquiring and developing a foundation of water skills.
Red Cross Swim Kids (ages 6 to 12)
It consists of 10 Swim Kids Levels:
Level 1 – is an orientation to the water with an introduction to floats and glides with kick. Endurance is built by improving distance.
Level 2 – builds front and back swim skills, introduces deep water activities and proper use of a Personal Floatation Device (PFD). Endurance is built through flutter kicking with assisted glides.
Level 3 – Introduces front crawl and making wise choices on where and when to swim. Diving is introduced and endurance is achieved by a 15 metre swim.
Level 4 – Front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl are developed. Children work on kneeling dives, surface support and endurance is built to a 25 metre swim.
Level 5 – Back crawl and safe boating skills are introduced along with sculling and whip kick on the back. Children try stride dives and endurance is developed through dolphin kick and a 50 metre swim.
Level 6 – Front and back crawl are refined and the elementary back stroke is introduced. Ice safety, throwing assists, treading water and the front dive are introduced. Endurance is built to a 75 metre swim.
Level 7 – Continues to build skills for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke, and introduces whip kick on the front. Children learn about airway and breathing obstructions and treading water. Endurance is built to a 150 metre swim.
Level 8 – Breaststroke, foot-first surface dives and rescue entries are introduced. Children learn the dangers of open water, hypothermia and rescue breathing on children and adults. Endurance is built to a 300 metre swim.
Level 9 – Front and back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined. Children also work on head-first shallow dives, standing dives, learn about wise choices and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built to a 400 metre swim.
Level 10 – Refines all of the strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick. Children learn about sun safety and ice rescue of others. Endurance is built to a 500 metre swim.
The Swim Patrol (Rookie, Ranger and Star for ages 9-12)
The Swim Patrol program provides enriched training for kids who are ready to go beyond learn-to-swim. The content is challenging and the levels demand good physical conditioning for timed swims and a variety of lifesaving skills. The Swim Patrol consists of three levels:
- Rookie Patrol – The Rookie Patrol features timed 100 m swims, 350 m workouts and swims with clothes. This award takes a work hard & play hard approach that develops swimming strength and efficiency, with emphasis on personal responsibility for Water Smart® behaviour.
- Ranger Patrol – The Ranger Patrol award is challenging but achievable with effort. Skill drills enhance capability in the water and include a non-contact rescue.
- Star Patrol – The Star Patrol award demands good physical conditioning for timed swims and workouts; this award also demands lifesaving judgment for whistle signals, and airway and bleeding first aid priorities. This award is excellent preparation for the Bronze Star award.
The Bronze Star – The Bronze Star award is the pre-Bronze Medallion training standard and it provides excellent preparation for success in obtaining the Bronze Medallion award. In Bronze Star, participants develop problem-solving and decision-making skills as individuals and as partners. They learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and they develop Water Smart® confidence and the lifesaving skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard. (Prerequisite: None)
The Bronze Medallion – Our Bronze Medallion program teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education—judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Rescuers learn tows, carries and defense and release methods in preparation for challenging rescues. Participants continue to develop stroke efficiency and endurance through timed swims. (Prerequisite: Minimum 13 years of age or Bronze Star)
The Bronze Cross – The Bronze Cross program is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safe supervision in aquatic facilities. Bronze Cross is a prerequisite for all advanced training programs including National Lifeguard and Instructor certification. (Prerequisite: Bronze Medallion / Emergency First Aid)
